Scale and Context

Welcome to Scale and Context – a blog that explores two seemingly disparate topics as they relate to Newfoundland: architecture and politics.

I practiced architecture here for almost four decades, so I am passionate about what the built environment can do to improve our individual and collective lives. In so doing, I have had to choke down so much political and bureaucratic ineptness that I was moved to retire, lest I burst – foul and rancorous.

So here I am, writing about that two things that move me. You will see that these topics converge at times in ways most unexpected. Architecture gets far too little press in Newfoundland. It surrounds us, yet its potential to enrich our lives is rarely aired. On the other hand, politics runs in our blood and is always on our tongue, but despite our near constant observation of it, it has enriched few of us.

The measure of both can be found in scale and context.
